United Kingdom

Barts Health operates from four major hospital sites (The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham) and a number of community locations, including Mile End hospital. Around 2.5 million people living in east London look to their services to provide them with the healthcare they need.

As well as district general hospital facilities for three London boroughs, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Newham, they have the largest cardiovascular centre in the UK, the second largest cancer centre in London, an internationally-renowned trauma team, and the home of the London Air Ambulance. The Royal London also houses one of the largest children’s hospitals in the UK, a major dental hospital, and leading stroke and renal units.

  • Dear Applicant

Thank you for considering the role of Group Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Barts Health NHS Trust. I am delighted you are exploring the possibility of joining our team at such an exciting and transformative time.

Barts Health NHS Trust is one of the largest healthcare providers in Europe, employing over 21,000 people and delivering care to more than 2.5 million residents of London and beyond. Our hospitals—The Royal London, Newham, St Bartholomew’s, and Whipps Cross—offer a wide range of clinical services, and together with our local partners, we work tirelessly to reduce health inequalities and provide equitable access to quality healthcare for all.

As a vital member of our Group Executive leadership team and a voting member of the Trust Board, the Group CMO plays a pivotal role in driving our clinical strategy and ensuring that our patients receive the highest standards of care. You will work in close collaboration with our Chief Nursing Officer to lead our clinical governance efforts, foster a culture of continuous improvement, and deliver safe, compassionate, and patient centred care across all our hospitals.

Your leadership will be instrumental in advancing our ambitious goals of improving clinical outcomes, reducing health disparities, and adopting cutting-edge technologies to enhance patient care. As the professional leader of our medical workforce, you will inspire and guide our clinicians towards excellence. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to lead our research efforts in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London, contributing to meaningful innovations that will address local and national healthcare priorities.

Externally, you will be a key representative of the Trust, working with system CMOs and healthcare leaders across north-east London and beyond, to identify collaborative solutions to the healthcare challenges we face and ensure the delivery of high-quality care across the region.

We are seeking an exceptional and compassionate leader with substantial experience at consultant level and a strong track record of clinical leadership in a complex healthcare environment. You will be an innovator, adept at managing change and delivering strategic priorities, and passionate about improving the lives of the diverse populations we serve.

We are actively seeking candidates from a range of backgrounds who offer the leadership skills required to succeed in a role of this complexity. If your values and ambition match ours and the opportunity to shape the future of healthcare for millions of people in one of the most diverse and dynamic regions in the UK attracts you, then I look forward to meeting you through the process and receiving your application.

    Sincerely,

    Shane DeGaris

    Group Chief Executive Officer
