University College London (UCL) is a truly global university. Founded in 1826 in the heart of London, UCL is the capital’s leading multidisciplinary university, with more than 13,000 staff and 42,000 students from 150 different countries. The institution is a diverse global community of world-class academics, students, industry links, external partners, and alumni. Their powerful collective of individuals and institutions work together to explore new possibilities.

The Objectives

  • To ensure and disseminate an understanding of the value of diversity within leadership teams and throughout the wider university.

  • Build a long-term relationship with the senior recruitment team to support and guide them in their goal of creating a landscape of opportunity for minority groups throughout the organisation.

  • To assist in the effective development in UCL’s Leadership Acceleration Programmes including: Future Leaders for potential senior leaders, Emerging Leadership aimed at BAME colleagues and Women in Leadership Programmes.

  • To positively effect the conversion of minority individuals from middle into senior management.

  • Further the perception of UCL as a leading innovative institution in terms of global diversity initiatives.

  • Create role attraction and differentiation for potential senior leadership and middle management from both academia and other sectors.

We approached Alumni Harvey Nash as we were impressed by the work that Owen and his team have been leading on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, particularly the networks that have been set up and the work they have been doing in supporting universities on the inclusion agenda. From the session Owen ran, the feedback was very positive. Staff felt that it had given them insight into an area of recruitment that they had not considered before, enabling them to think about how they interact with a recruitment process being managed through Executive Search.

In practice

A multi-disciplinary team led by Owen Francis, Head of the Higher Education and Non-Profit Practice at Alumni Harvey Nash, scheduled a number of sessions with UCL’s internal teams specifically designed to target the professional development of UCL’s BAME and minority colleagues from both professional services and academia.

The programmes aim to:

  • Explain the value of diversity

  • Enable course members to market their skills more effectively

  • Increase awareness of the value of personal and professional networks and the tools such as LinkedIn that facilitate these networks.

  • Empower colleagues to expand and enhance their career potential not just internally within UCL but throughout education and wider sectors.
